Palace

Today’s Ettlinger Schloss was preceded by two older structures. A medieval castle was built here in the 13th century, and two thirds of the original castle tower can be seen today from within the palace courtyard as rough stonework on the left side. The margraves of Baden-Baden had a Renaissance palace built here in 1546, but this structure was completely destroyed along with the rest of the city in 1689 during the Nine Years’ War. Using portions of the ruins which were still available, Margravine Sybilla Augusta had a Baroque Palace built as her widow’s residence where she would spend the last years of her life. Under master-builder Michael Rohrer, construction was begun in 1727 and completed in 1733. The artistic highlight of the new palace was the interior decoration of the palace chapel, today’s Asamsaal. |
