Half-timbered Houses

In 1975, Ettlingen’s large-scale Altstadt urban renewal project  began. The magic word animating the efforts was Objektsanierung (“object  renewal”), which especially benefited the distinctive half-timbered houses (Fachwerkhäuser) so important to the city’s image. These buildings are representative of the construction methods and appearance of houses in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Era.
