Spessart

Spessart was the first community to be incorporated into Ettlingen, in 1972. It has a population of about 3,000 and lies at 308 m above sea level.
Spessart is documented for the first time in 1265. From 1294 until 1803, Spessart was ruled by Frauenalb Abbey, leading to constant disputes with Ettlingen over the use of the forest. In the Napoleonic Era, when Baden was made a Grand Duchy and religious properties were secularized, the villages belonging to Frauenalb Abbey became free communities, remaining so until the communal reforms of 1972-1974.
