Margravine Sybilla Augusta chose the newly-canonized Bohemian saint John of Nepomuk as her palace chapel’s patron saint. The renowned Bavarian artist Cosmas Damian Asam was contracted with designing a fresco to decorate the interior of the chapel. The fresco depicts the life and passion of St. John of Nepomuk in eight major scenes on the ceiling. The artistic and thematic climax of the work is at the center of the dome, where the saint is “taken up by the Most Holy Trinity into the glory of the martyrs”. Asam completed this magnificent ceiling fresco in ten weeks.
