This war memorial, created in 1927 by Ettlingen sculptor Oskar A. Kiefer, is the first `pacifist war memorial´. It is found above the archway on the southern side of the town hall tower. A ravenous Death is depicted seated on a wicked horse, swinging his scythe and mercilessly trampling human corpses underfoot – soldier and civilian alike. In the `underground´ area, a battle plays out between two brutal giants, wound in the coils of a snake. The sculpture is a warning against war and the repetition of its misery.
